Azana - Biography, Career and Discography

Makhosazana Princess Masango, professionally known as Azana, is a South African singer and songwriter. Her musical journey started at the age of 15. After signing with Big City Dreams, Azana released her debut studio album "Ingoma" in 2020, which immediately topped the charts in South Africa. The album's lead single, "Your Love," achieved double platinum certification from the Recording Industry of South Africa (RiSA).

Early Childhood

Azana, born on September 13, 2000, grew up in Chesterville, Durban. Her given name, Makhosazana, meaning Princess, was given to her by her parents because she was her family's only daughter and youngest child. Initially reserved, Azana loved singing and dancing privately but later gained confidence to perform publicly. Encouraged by teachers and her mother, she pursued music professionally due to her evident talent. Azana adopted her stage name from her birth name, embracing its regal connotations. She began recording music at 15 in a neighborhood studio, where producers were impressed by her distinctive and soothing voice, often likened to royalty.

Career

In early April 2020, Azana collaborated with South African DJ Sun-El Musician on the single "Uhuru". Azana penned the song to address the struggles faced by black people, including unemployment and poverty. Inspired by a conversation with DayDeejayMondy SA about his early career challenges in the industry, Azana featured Sun-El Musician on the track, releasing it on Mandela Day 2020.

Following this, Azana's breakout single "Your Love" was released in May 2020, produced by Taffy Da Don. The song achieved commercial success, earning double platinum certification from the Recording Industry of South Africa (RiSA).

Her debut studio album, "Ingoma", was launched on July 17, 2020. The album soared to number 1 on the Apple Music Pop Chart and featured collaborations with Afriikan Papi, Disciples of House, and Sun-El Musician. At the 27th South African Music Awards, "Ingoma" garnered nominations for Best Afro Pop Album and Newcomer of the Year.

In October 2021, Azana contributed to Platoon's compilation album "African Lullabies Part 1". She released her single "Higher" on December 3, 2021.
