Rachel J, born Rachel Jambaya in Kwekwe, Zimbabwe's Midlands province, grew up in Gweru, where she received her early education. Raised by her grandmother, Gogo Phoeby, a peasant farmer, after the loss of her parents, Rachel J developed resilience and determination in the face of challenges. She completed her high school education at the age of 16 and went on to earn a diploma at a local college. Her pursuit of knowledge later took her to South Africa, where she obtained a degree in Fashion and Interior Designing.

Career

Rachel J began her music career in 2016 with the release of her debut album "Triumph," a gospel project dedicated to her grandmother. Not confining herself to a single genre, she later explored various musical styles, releasing singles and albums such as "Makwikwi Reloaded," "Njiva," "Bada Boom," "Ngoro," "Hallelujah," "Strong Black Man," and "Fambai Mberi."

Her musical journey took a significant turn in 2018 when she released the Afro-fusion track "Makwikwi." The song gained substantial radio play in Zimbabwe and stayed on the charts for several weeks. This success led to the creation of "Makwikwi Reloaded" in the dancehall genre, featuring prominent Zimdancehall artists Soul Jah Love, Sniper Storm, and Lady Squanda in December 2018. In 2019, she collaborated with Dereck Mpofu on a jazz track called "Njiva," followed by "Bada Boom," which featured Roki, and "Ngoro," featuring Enzo Ishall. The latter sparked some controversy in Zimbabwe.

Rachel J encountered significant controversies in 2019 and 2020, particularly regarding her personal life and relationships. Allegations arose suggesting that she was involved with former Finance deputy minister Terence Mukupe and South African-based cleric Shepherd Bushiri. The situation escalated when Mukupe accused Rachel J of infidelity, claiming that Bushiri had impregnated her.

Rachel J's family strongly denied these allegations, defending her character and asserting that the claims were false. The dispute became public, with accusations and counter-accusations exchanged between the parties involved, further fueling media attention and public scrutiny.
