Early Life and Education
DJ Sbu, born Sbusiso Leope on 28 May 1977 in Tembisa, South Africa, is the only child of Ntombizodwa and Mothlegi Leope. He attended Central Secondary School in Pretoria before furthering his education at the African Media University, where he studied sound engineering. He also pursued electrical engineering at Technikon Witwatersrand.
Career
DJ Sbu began his career as a broadcast presenter at a radio station, where he worked as a volunteer producer and presenter for a year and a half. His passion for radio and TV grew during this time, and two years later, he joined YFM, a popular radio station. There, he produced and presented a weekend slot called "Beauty and the Beast." Due to his growing popularity, he was given a primetime slot, "Y-Lens." DJ Sbu left YFM in 2007 to host the breakfast show on Ukhozi FM. After a year, he returned to YFM and later joined Metro FM in 2010.
His time at YFM significantly boosted his fame as a radio host. Beyond radio, DJ Sbu has also been involved in various other media and entertainment projects. He produced and hosted popular weekend shows, filmed a movie called Hang Time, appeared in a Toyota Tazz advertisement, and did a commercial for World Online. He also had a role in Isidingo in 2001 and starred in It Rained Last Night.
DJ Sbu co-founded TS Records with businessman TK Nciza to promote musicians from disadvantaged backgrounds. The label has represented some of South Africa's top talents, including Zahara, Lungelo, and Nhlanhla Nciza. Additionally, he ventured into TV production and hosted the reality game show Friends Like These.
