Victor Kunonga, born on October 25, 1974, is a Zimbabwean Afro-jazz singer and songwriter. He gained prominence in 2004 with his debut albums, quickly becoming a well-known name in the music scene by 2007. Kunonga is celebrated for his contributions to Afro-jazz and his engaging performances.

Early Life

Victor Kunonga was born in Shurugwi, Zimbabwe, and grew up in Hwedza before moving to Bulawayo and later Harare. It was in Harare that he discovered his musical talent. A self-taught acoustic guitarist, Kunonga made his mark on the Zimbabwean music scene in 2004 with his debut album, *Such Is Life – Ndanyengetedzwa* (Persuaded). Since then, he has become one of the leading artists in Zimbabwe, renowned for his contributions to Afro-jazz music.

Career

In 1999, Victor Kunonga’s dream of enrolling at the College of Music in Bulawayo was thwarted when he was told he needed to own musical instruments to be accepted. Lacking instruments, he was unable to enroll and subsequently moved to Harare to pursue a career in commercial design, completing a graphics course.

In early 2001, Kunonga began attending music workshops at the College of Music in Harare, where he first learned to play the guitar. He draws inspiration from Zimbabwean music masters such as Oliver Mtukudzi, Thomas Mapfumo, Louis Mhlanga, and Chiwoniso Maraire, as well as traditional rhythms. Kunonga has also been active in advocating against social issues like gender-based violence and drug abuse through his work with non-governmental organizations.

His debut album, *Such Is Life – Ndanyengetedzwa* (2004), featured popular tracks like "Maidarirei," "Ndanyengetedzwa namai," and "Tigere." The album's success was further bolstered by a well-received music video for "Maidarirei."

Kunonga’s second album, *Uyo* (2006), featured prominent Afro-jazz artists, including drummer Sam Mataure, vocalist Prudence Katomeni, bassist Kelly Rusike, keyboardist Manasa Mujawo, guitarist Zivanai Masango, percussionist Adam Chisvo, and saxophonist Richie Lopez. The album was a major success on Zimbabwean music charts and remains popular.

In 2010, he released his third album, *Handinete*. Kunonga formed the group “Peace” in 2004, which has performed at major festivals and high-profile events in Zimbabwe. The group has shared the stage with renowned artists such as Oliver Mtukudzi, Steve Dyer, Malaika, Habib Koité, Jabu Khanyile, Yvonne Chaka Chaka, Judith Sephuma, Louis Mhlanga, and Hugh Masekela. They are known for their vibrant performances at festivals like the Harare International Festival of the Arts (HIFA) and the Zimbabwe Jazz Festival.
